Complexity Science meets Digital Humanism

Many of the current societal challenges such as algorithmic biases or the past pandemic are by nature complex phenomena. They are composed of various knowledge domains and affected socio-demographic groups embedded in a complex system of power and privilege. It is therefore crucial to address digitalization and humanism through the lens of complex systems.

In order to already sensitize young researchers in the fields of Complex Systems, Computer Science, Data Science, Computational Social Science, and Humanities and Social Sciences for this topic at the beginning of their career, a spring school was conducted from May 15-17 in Vienna. The 3-day workshop “Complexity Science meets Digital Humanism” is part of the project Roadmaps Digital Humanism for which Complexity Science Hub and leiwand.ai partnered up and gained a grant by WWTF (Wiener Wissenschafts-, Forschungs- und Technologiefonds) and Wirtschaftsagentur Wien.

The aim of the workshop was to raise awareness about the importance of human-centric complex systems science and digital humanism and promote their adoption in technology and system design. This was reflected in the program that offered a well prepared mix of high-level speakers from academia and business. Amongst them was leiwand.ai CEO Gertraud Leimüller, who introduced the concept of Trustworthy AI.
