Initiative: Trustworthy AI In Practice
„Trustworthy AI in practice“ is an Austrian initiative launched by leiwand.ai to start the interdisciplinary discussion on trustworthy artificial intelligence (AI) in Austria. The aim is to jointly develop a charter with all relevant stakeholders committing on action items to promote trustworthy AI.
The Austrian initiative „Trustworthy AI in practice“ was started by the founders of leiwand.ai, Rania Wazir and Gertraud Leimüller in 2021. Together with cooperation partners, such as the Vienna Business Agency, the Vienna Chamber of Commerce, INiTS and Women in Health IT, as well as the research project fairbydesign (promoted by FFG), leiwand.ai has started an interdisciplinary discussion on trustworthy AI in Austria. Trustworthiness in the context of AI includes a variety of aspects, such as human agency and oversight, privacy, transparency, accountability, diversity, non-discrimination and fairness. The aim of the initiative is to create a charter on trustworthy AI identifying relevant action items by autumn 2022. With this in mind, leiwand.ai has set-up a workshop series dedicating one workshop to different sectors, in which the highest pressure for trustworthy AI was identified:
· Trustworthy AI and human resources
· Trustworthy AI and health
· Trustworthy AI and environmental sustainability
· Trustworthy AI and trade
In those co-creation workshops, each subject will be elaborated in interdisciplinary discussions with users, developers, scientists and stakeholders from companies and the public administration. Together, possible areas of application, their specific challenges and opportunities as well as their practical requirements for AI will be identified. The insights gained will be recorded in writing and shared with all participants. A brief summary can be found in our blog.
All findings will be linked during a conference on “Trustworthy AI in Practice” in autumn 2022. The results of the conference will culminate in a charter on Trustworthy AI in Practice. The charter will be based on the practical requirements of the relevant stakeholders, and include specific action items for various subscribers.
The Charter on Trustworthy AI will be a living document ,and it is intended to be checked and updated regularly. Through the joint development of the charter within the community, relevant stakeholders can establish ownership and will play an important and driving role in the review process.
The interdisciplinary discourse through the initiative “Trustworthy AI in practice” empowers all relevant stakeholders to jointly shape the development and application of the technology. By committing to a charter on trustworthy AI, the potential of AI can unfold, and the numerous opportunities can be exploited, as well as the emerging challenges overcome.
